Our Review of the MacPac Vamoose baby backpack
The Macpac Vamoose is the best of a top-end line of kid carriers. As this should lead you to suspect, it's a great carrier - built for comfort and durability, with many useful extras included. As you know if you've ever used a child carrier, when you're doing a lot of walking with your kid on your back, comfortability and adjustability are top priorities. The Vamoose certainly delivers in this department, with a flexible harness that adjusts to your shifting body as you walk, and a carefully-engineered hipbelt that really spreads the weight around well. Everything about this pack has been optimized to make it as comfortable and easy-to-use as possible - the Vamoose feels much like you're carrying a high quality load-carrying sack.
The Vamoose is made from 550D coated polyester, making it tough and water resistant. There is plenty of storage, including a hipbelt pocket, a roomy base pocket, and a zip-off daybag. Only the Vamoose comes with the Macpac Sombrero & Rainbow sun / rain shields - extremely useful accessories for keeping your child protected during your hikes. If you're just going to use a child carrier for occasional shopping trips, this might be too much carrier for you - but if you plan on frequent or extended use, you'll probably find the Vamoose perfect for your needs.
Differences between the Macpac Possum and the Vamoose:
The Mac Pac Vamoose comes with several features not found in the Possum -
- Handy zip-off daybag
- "Sombrero" and "Rainbow" sun/rain shield accessories come included (must be purchased separately for the Possum)
- Base overload straps (allowing you to strap a jacket, blanket, or whatever else you'd like to the bottom of the pack)
- A slightly more plush harness, with a beefier hipbelt - ideal for longer walks and heavier kids
- Two harness size options
Both of them are great baby backpacks - I'd lean toward the Vamoose if you're a serious hiker, plan on taking long walks, or if you'll need the sun and rain shield accessories anyway (remember, they come with the Vamoose, but must be purchased separately for the Possum).

The Vamoose comes in two harness sizes:
- Size 2 is best suited for people 5' - 5' 10" tall (back length 12-17") - Size 3 is best suited for people 5' 8" - 6' 4" tall (back length 14-19") (Back length is measured from the top of your shoulder straight to the top of your hip bone.) |
